Frequently Asked Questions about UNE-EN ISO/IEC 15189

Accreditation under this standard is applicable to clinical laboratories engaged in biological, microbiological, immunological, chemical, immunohematological, hematological, biophysical, cytological, pathological, and other types of analysis.
In these cases, accreditation cannot be obtained because these types of tests are not considered clinical. However, they could be accredited under the ISO 17025 standard.
Both standards include management and technical requirements, although the main difference is that their scope of application is completely different. The first applies to testing and calibration laboratories, while the second applies to clinical laboratories analyzing biological samples of human origin. Each of these standards specifies different, specific requirements. For example, ISO 15189 includes requirements for analytical methods, as ISO/IEC 17025 does; however, it also covers pre-analytical methods, which are not addressed by ISO/IEC 17025.
